GET A GLIMPSE OF AN ANCIENT SPORT

MAYAN BALL COURT

The Mesoamerican (or Mayan) Ballgame is the first sport in the history of humanity. Dating back to at least 2,500 BC, the game was played with a solid rubber ball (weighing about 10 pounds) with teams of one to four people. Added to the World Heritage List in 1980, the ancient city of Copan (in Honduras) features one of these distinguished ball courts. But you don’t have to travel to mainland Honduras to experience this ancient sport. At Maya Key, you can walk around our replica of the Copan Ball Court. It features the intricately carved stelae, which rulers likely constructed to illustrate themselves in various costumes.
